Self-healing ballistic rubber targets are built for high-volume training, longevity, and safer shooting environments... but only when they’re used correctly. At TA Targets, we believe in building equipment that endures. That is why we make the longest lasting steel targets on the market. Understanding caliber ratings, and proper safety guidelines is what keeps training effective and shooters safe.
This guide breaks down how self-healing ballistic rubber targets are rated, how to use them responsibly, and what not to do.
What “Self-Healing” Really Means
A self-healing ballistic rubber target is engineered to absorb projectile energy and close around the bullet path, extending target life and reducing fragmentation. This doesn’t mean the target is indestructible, and it absolutely DOES NOT mean it replaces a safe backstop.
Self-healing rubber targets are designed for training efficiency, not containment. Making you need to buy hundreds of Cardboard and Paper Targets to complete a range day.
Approved Ammunition & Shooting Ratings
Self-healing ballistic rubber targets are approved for any ball or FMJ caliber up to .50 BMG. Full metal jacket and standard ball ammunition allow the rubber to perform as intended.
Proper Ammo
Do NOT Use the Following:
- Hollow points
- Explosive rounds
- Incendiary rounds
- Wads
- Slugs
Using prohibited ammunition can cause excessive damage, and unsafe conditions. This is non-negotiable for safety.
Shotgun Distance Matters
Shooting shotgun shot closer than 15 yards will result in a highly concentrated pattern, which can tear a large hole in the target. While the rubber may still absorb energy, repeated close-range shotgun use will dramatically shorten rubber target life and compromise performance.
Distance is part of the rating... respect it.
Mounting & Setup Guidelines - Use a Proper Target Stand
Proper mounting is critical for both safety and longevity.
- Attach the self-healing target to a sturdy target stand
- Use the provided clamps and screws, or your preferred secure mounting solution
- Ensure the target hangs freely or is firmly supported per your setup
- Never allow the firearm barrel to contact the target
Remember: THE TARGET DOES NOT STOP BULLETS. Always place it in front of a safe, appropriate backstop. Our bullet traps are great backstops for firearm training.
Painting & Maintenance Of Self-Healing Targets
Infinity Targets paint may show scratches from shipping, this is cosmetic only and does not affect performance.
Painting Guidelines:
- Paint over hits using spray paint or primer (any color works)
- Primer is preferred for visibility and adhesion
- Keep your nose and mouth covered while painting
- Touch-ups restore visibility and extend training value
Core Safety Rules (Non-Negotiable)
- Always use a safe backstop (Like a TA Targets Bullet Trap)
- Never fire with the barrel touching the target
- Be aware of surroundings, ricochet potential, and range layout
Self-healing targets improve training, but only disciplined shooters make them safe.
