Building a Private Range the Right Way: Inside Jake Paul’s Ranch Setup with TA Targets

When people think about building a private range, most of them focus on one thing: quantity of targets.

"What are the most amount of targets I can get for my money?"

That’s the wrong starting point.

When we were brought in to help outfit Jake Paul’s Ranch (Paul Reserve), the goal was to build a range that would last, support real training, and still be a place where friends could show up and have fun.

That balance of purpose and enjoyment is what separates a serious range from a pile of steel in a field.

The Theory Behind the Layout

This range was started with three berms, staged at roughly 50, 80, and 110 yards. Each distance creates a cohesive training environment rather than three disconnected shooting lanes.

  • 50 yards is the crossover space pistol fundamentals, short-range rifle work, transitions.
  • 80 yards shifts the focus toward rifle training and movement.
  • 110 yards and beyond is where heavier rifles, higher-energy cartridges, and dynamic setups live.

Instead of locking the range into a single purpose, everything was built to stay portable and adjustable. Portable steel targets can be pulled off the berms and moved into the flat. Heights can be adjusted. Configurations can change day to day.

That flexibility matters more than people realize.

Why We Avoid “Static” Thinking

Each berm has a variety of target systems. Right now, many of them are in staggered lines, and that’s intentional. It allows multiple shooters to get reps on the same line while helping to mitigate the risk of frag coming back.

All of the systems can be repositioned to support:

  • Competitive drills
  • Defensive training
  • Movement-based shooting
  • Or just running a fun range day with friends

And there’s one thing you’ll notice immediately: There are no 2x4s anywhere on this range.

Armored Posts: The Long-Term Decision

Wood posts feel cheap at the beginning. Over time, they become expensive.

Fragmentation, constant replacement, downtime, and labor all add up. On a high-use private range like this, maintenance quickly outweighs the upfront savings. Every adjustable system here runs on armored posts. Rigid, durable, and built to take abuse without becoming a problem later. It’s a one-time decision that eliminates years of frustration.

Steel Target Selection: Training First, Fun Always

At the first berm around 50 yards, we focused on foundational steel:

The Double Falling Tree is always a favorite. Racing side-by-side forces shooters to stay honest. That’s real training wrapped in something people actually enjoy.

The Second Berm: Rifle-Focused Versatility

The middle berm, sitting around 80 yards, leans heavily into rifle work. This bay supports:

  • Line drills with multiple shooters
  • Transition drills
  • Portable target movement into the flat

You’ll see a heavy use of A-DAP systems here because they’re the workhorses of our lineup. A-DAP steel target systems are adjustable height, adjustable angle, fully armored, and easy to reposition. Not to mention our 1/2" A-DAPs have a lifetime warranty.

Spacing was deliberate. Targets aren’t stacked directly behind one another, reducing the chance of low pulls impacting bases or hardware downrange. Good range design is about preventing problems before they happen, and it’s the same philosophy we followed during the Staccato Ranch buildout, another example of how intentional layout decisions directly impact safety and performance over time.

The Third Berm: Capability Expands

Out past 110 yards, the range really opens up.

This bay allows shooters to work from vehicles, set up tents or awnings, and engage targets from a wide variety of positions. It can function as a long-range rifle bay or be pulled in tight and treated like a pistol bay if needed.

That’s something paper targets simply can’t replicate.

AR550 Grounders, Goliaths (50BMG), and Purpose-Built Steel

Throughout the range, AR550 Grounders Targets were placed to add variety while protecting other systems. These portable systems are low to the ground and can almost act as a shield in some ways to prevent low impacts on bases and other components.

For precision and hunting-style training, a Gopher VAR Popper was added. Small animal target. Reactive feedback. Perfect for dialing in rifles.

50 BMG Target

On the heavy end, a Goliath Target System was installed to safely handle extreme cartridges, including .50 BMG. Half-inch AR550, fully armored, and built specifically for that kind of abuse.

A Rifle Dueling Tree with half-inch paddles rounds out the bay, giving shooters a durable, safe way to run full-power rifles like .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor without concern.

The Added 4th berm

After doing the 3 berms, a 4th berm was added that was filled with reactive steel target systems. This berm focuses on building community. That may sound odd but it's the truth. Having reactive systems like plate racks, dueling trees, and double falling trees allow for some friendly competitions that build speed and accuracy.

Bonus: Stretching the Range to 300 Yards

Paul Reserve - 300yd range

Beyond the main berms, the property also supports a lane stretching out to roughly 300 yards. Long-distance steel forces shooters to slow down, read conditions, confirm data, and actually understand their rifle. Wind calls matter. Positions matter. Fundamentals are exposed quickly. Steel at this distance provides instant feedback that paper simply can’t, allowing shooters to validate hits without walking hundreds of yards downrange.

It turns the property from a short range training environment into a mid-range environment, supporting everything from precision work and hunting prep to stretching modern cartridges the way they were designed to be used.

Why This Kind of Range Matters

A great range isn’t just about training.

And it isn’t just about fun.

It’s about creating a place people want to be. Where they feel safe, challenged, and confident in the equipment downrange. Where new shooters feel welcomed and experienced shooters feel respected.

Quality steel sets that tone immediately.

When shooters see TA Targets steel downrange, they know what they’re working with. They know it’s built right. They know it’s safe. That trust matters.

Build Once. Regret Never.

We’ve spent over a decade helping ranges avoid the same mistakes like cheap steel, poor layouts, exposed reset mechanisms, and endless maintenance. We don't hide this information from our customers, we want to share it. We have even built range packages for customers to purchase and make their dream shooting range.

Jake Paul’s property is a perfect example of what happens when you plan first and build with intention.

If you’re looking to build a private range, upgrade a club, or outfit a professional facility, our goal is simple:

Spend your money once. Build something that lasts. Train without compromise.

If that’s the kind of range you want, we’d be glad to help you build it.

There is a battle we are waging.

Talking about a range build is great, but what if we told you there is a much larger, more important issue at hand? TA Targets exists to inspire individuals to become capable providers and protectors. We have waged war on the apathy that runs rampant in our culture. We have a duty to lead by example, and to encourage others to do the same. Often that happens through blogs like this, or the media we create. But even more important is the relationships we are building. When someone comes to us to help build their range, there is a huge opportunity to make a lasting impact. Whether that is a new firearm owner building their first range, or a seasoned gunslinger who is well on their way to mastery, we have an opportunity to encourage, to lead, and to set a standard. That is why a range build like this matters so much. To the public eye, you simply see us building another awesome shooting range. And, while that is truly cool and we are humbled at each opportunity, that is the smaller part of each range story. Countless examples exist where we not only built the range, but we also shared our knowledge. We've passed the torch to the next person, who will pass it to another. We put our faith, values, and compass into direct action with each interaction we have. Think of the influence that occurs when people lead by this example.

We want you to be excited about a range like this. But not because of the material possessions, because of what it stands for. It stands for people exercising a God given right, and then using that right to become excellent at their skills with firearms. And even further, each client spends hours with us through phone calls, emails, texts, and face-to-face meetings. Who do you want influencing the culture? Just another "big box" brand that only cares about money? Or an agile, aggressive team that is driven by purpose and values?

We know the answer to that question. And it directs every action we take.

So when you see another range build, remember: It's another opportunity to change a life. To share the gospel. To live as an example. To set forth more momentum in the cultural battle. And it sets our team apart.

If YOU are driven by vision, and you care deeply about the other people of your community, your tribe, we hope to earn a conversation with you. We are die hard loyalists, devoted to revolutionizing not only shooting ranges, but the hearts, souls, and minds of everyone we interact with. It sounds cliche, but it is true: YOU are why TA Targets exists. You are the reason we do the hard things daily. And the end result? A collective of people centered around this desire to become a capable provider and protector. Something we can live for, and die for.

We are looking forward to talking with you soon and making your range a reality.
